The brief
To replace external front and rear windows with aluminium flush casement windows; create more space inside the property by using high quality aluminium internal heritage doors, plus a rear heritage door; to give the property a cottage feel with a new composite front door.
The property
The client’s property is situated in the suburb of Birstall, approximately three miles north of Leicester. This area expanded rapidly at the end of the 19th century, and many of the properties (including this one) are semi-detached examples dating from the 1930s.
The client was keen to combine the sleekness and energy efficiency of modern aluminium with a nod to the design ethics of the house’s 1930s origins. This balance was achieved by using ALUK 58BW Hi Flush casement windows at the front of the house. These were fitted with integral blinds at the request of the client, who wanted to reduce the amount of space taken up on the inside of the windows. The casement windows were finished in RAL colours Pebble Grey (external) and Hipca White (internal).
Internally, the client wanted to create a feeling of space between rooms while keeping a measure of privacy. The solution was the ID30 internal glazing system, which combines the high performance and slim sightlines of aluminium with the classic look of British-made steel windows and doors. The screening system between the living room and kitchen/dining areas was configured as sliding doors at the client’s request.
To complete the steel-frame look, SD70 aluminium heritage doors in standard black were fitted at the rear of the property.
Finally, a Composite door finished in Sage Green (outside) and White (inside) was fitted at the front of the property, fulfilling the client’s requirement for a ‘cottage’ feel.
